Dimitrios Zekkos edits new Manual of Practice in Geoenvironmental Engineering
Apr 23, 2025

Professor Dimitrios Zekkos is the Editor of the new Manual of Practice in Geoenvironmental Engineering (MOP 159) published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The manual was developed under the Auspices of the Geoenvironmental Engineering Technical Committee of ASCE's Geo-Institute, and is the first Manual of Practice published by the Geo-Institute.
The manual involved over 50 authors and reviewers since its inception in 2016. In addition to the independent reviews of each chapter, the complete manual was also thoroughly reviewed and approved by a Blue-Ribbon panel of NAE members that consisted of James K. Mitchell, Rudy Bonaparte and Craig Benson.
The comprehensive manual is titled Geoenvironmental Engineering: Site Contaminant Characterization, Containment Facilities, Solid Waste Materials, and Contaminated Ground Interventions, designated as Manual of Practice (MOP) 159, and serves as a consensus document of the state of practice in geoenvironmental engineering.
MOP 159 covers a wide range of topics pertinent to geoenvironmental engineering, including:
- Contaminant transport and fate
- Geomechanical and geochemical characterization
- Waste material properties
- Design of base and cover containment systems
- Static and seismic slope stability of waste containment systems
- Permeable and impermeable (cutoff) barriers
- Excavation, ground improvement, remediation
- Mine waste geotechnics
The manual emphasizes practical engineering applications and includes design procedures and recommendations where appropriate. For more information or to access the manual, you can visit the ASCE Library: ASCE Library
