Two new Faculty Members Join Geosystems Faculty
Oct 20, 2020
In January 2020, the Geosystems group welcomed two new Faculty:
Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos moved to UCB after 11 years at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD from UC Berkeley in 2008. Her core research and teaching areas lie in geomechanics and geotechnical engineering, with a focus on how infrastructure systems respond to seismic and other natural hazards. Adda has established herself as an outstanding academic, with strong contributions across research, teaching and service. She is a national leader in the research community, and has received the ASCE Casagrande, ASCE Middlebrooks, and NSF CAREER awards. In March 2020, she was elected President of the U.S. Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER).
Dimitrios Zekkos also moved to UCB after 11 years at the University of Michigan. He received his PhD from UC Berkeley in 2005 and prior to joining academia, worked in the consulting industry. His research interests are in sensing, robotics and informatics in geotechnical engineering, with a particular emphasis on geotechnical earthquake engineering, geoenvironmental engineering and landslides. He is internationally recognized for his work in seismic resiliency of landfills as well as energy generation processes in solid waste, and has received several awards from ASCE, ISSMGE and the Prakash Foundation.
Adda and Dimitrios join the current geo-Faculty that consist of Nick Sitar, Jon Bray, Kenichi Soga, Yoram Rubin, Jamie Rector, Mike Riemer, Robert Kayen and Norm Abrahamson.
