Hallal and Athanasopoulos-Zekkos Receive USUCGER Grant on Advancing AI in Geotechnical Education
Oct 02, 2025

Professors Mohamad Hallal and Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos have been awarded a grant from the U.S. University Council on Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER) for their project, Next-Generation Geotechnical Engineering Education: Coding, AI, and Automation. The initiative aims to revitalize geotechnical engineering education by integrating coding, automation, and artificial intelligence into core soil mechanics topics. Through a series of structured assignments, students will connect traditional hand calculations with modern computational tools, while also learning to critically engage with AI-powered technologies. The project will provide open-source resources for educators nationwide and equip students with the interdisciplinary skills needed to thrive in an evolving engineering landscape.
